Quick Update Mar. 20th, 2006 @ 04:18 pm
So I haven't been using my LiveJournal much in the last few months. Eek. I've been writing on my MSN page a bit though (it doesn't get very personal though because the primary readers are my friends, unlike LJ where I don't personally know most of the readers). But this semester is going amazingly well. I've been in such good spirits the last few months. yay! I just got back from my spring break vacation to California to visit my brother and 4 month old niece. That was a good trip- too bad I had a cold the whole time! :S

My New Years Letter Jan. 8th, 2006 @ 10:22 pm
Happy New Year!!
As I reflected on the past year during New Year’s Eve, I realized that although 2006 is sure to be a great new year, I’m a bit sad that 2005 has ended. This past year was a very big year for me- full of events, adventures, and changes. Therefore, I’m writing this letter as a recap of the biggest events of my year. And I figured that I might as well send it out to some of my family and friends! So here is the summary of my life in 2005!

I was a senior in high school...

I loved being a senior. It provided opportunities that I wouldn’t have had as an underclassman. I designed a mural for our cafeteria and painted it with my friends for art class. I was actively involved with our school yearbook (especially the senior class section). And I was the president of the National Honor Society, which involved organizing the Staff Member of the Month, assisting with homework help, and speaking at our induction ceremony. In the spring, I went on my senior class trip with the majority of my classmates. We went to Washington D.C. and New York City and a few places in between. I enjoyed hanging out with so many of my classmates in a non-school setting before we graduated. The trip was a great experience. In April, I went to my senior prom with Marcus. Before prom we, along with Marcus’ friends and their dates, played Nintendo games and drove around town in a camper. Prom was fun, but the novelty had worn off because it was our second year.

I was part of the Class of 2005…..

Once senior year was done, it was time to graduate. I remember doing the math back in elementary school to figure out in which year my class was going to be graduating. Last New Years, it seemed surreal that the year 2005 had finally rolled around! The highlight of my graduation ceremony was giving my valedictorian speech. I used Landon, my 7-month-old nephew, as a prop to represent the beginning of our 18-year journey towards our graduation. I thought that my speech was really successful, and I was on a high from it for the rest of the day.

I had a full time job during the summer….

After graduation, I felt like an adult immediately because I started my first full-time job. I worked at HTI all summer. I assisted the tool buyers in the purchasing office each day. My job consisted of entering purchase order information into the computer system, sorting stacks of tool designs, printing and copying drawings, and other miscellaneous tasks. It wasn’t the most entertaining position, but it helped me pay fall’s tuition bill!

But my summer wasn’t all work; I went to Puerto Rico…

The highlight of my summer was, without a doubt, my 2-week trip to Puerto Rico in July. My best friend Sylvia was born in Puerto Rico and still has lots of relatives living there. I traveled there with Sylvia, our friend Phil, and Sylvia’s family to visit them. We stayed with her grandparents (who are now mi abuelos tambien), and met all of Sylvia’s relatives and friends. It was an amazing trip and an unforgettable experience!

And my summer included other highlights as well…

After I returned from Puerto Rico, I went to the Sonshine music festival in Willmar. This was my second year going to this 3-day outdoor concert. I enjoyed this summer’s festival more than the last one because I knew more of the bands this time around. My favorite bands were Casting Crowns and MercyMe. In August, I had an amazing weekend in Winsted at a Together Encountering Christ retreat (Riverbend #199). I was a table leader at this retreat. My table grew very close throughout the weekend. TEC retreats have become a huge part of my life over the past two years. I have made so many dear friends through this organization. I’m so thankful that I have had the opportunity to be a part of the TEC movement.

My family grew throughout the year…

Each of my siblings had big announcements to make this past year. My brother Darrin and his wife Erin had a baby girl named Allison in October. They came to Minnesota in December and I got to meet my cute little niece. My sister Doreen announced her engagement to her fiancé Randy this summer. I’m going to be a bridesmaid in their wedding next October. My sister Danette and her husband Greg are expecting their second baby this spring. I’m sure my 14-month old nephew Landon will love having a little brother to follow in his toddling footsteps.

But the biggest change that occurred this past year was my move to the UofM…

In September, I moved to the University of Minnesota campus. Moving to college was the biggest change I’ve gone through in my life thus far. I adjusted really well and am having a great time at school! I was surprised at how easy it was for me to be outgoing and meet people. I love being around my peers 24/7. Some of my classes this fall were hard (and boring), but I’m done with my first semester and am currently enjoying my winter break. I have been admitted into the Journalism and Mass Communication School at the U. I plan on attaining a journalism major with a focus in visual communication. Other activities I’ve been involved with at the UofM include Campus Crusade for Christ and the YMCA Y-Buddies Mentoring program. I’ve made a bunch of great friends from within these programs, from my fall classes, and, of course, from living in my residence hall. My spring semester starts January 17th. I’m looking forward to being back!

So that was my life in the year 2005. I hate to see the year change, but I’m sure 2006 will bring a bunch of excitement my way as well! May God bless your life in 2006!

Weekends are my favorite Nov. 14th, 2005 @ 05:58 pm
I had an awesome weekend. I love spontaneous plans.

Friday:
Went out to eat at Annies with Kate, Luiza, and Clara (girls from my bible study). We had yummy milkshakes and cheeseburgers. Then we went to Everyday People (thrift store). We all bought something there. It was awesome. I got a navy blue fire rescue tshirt that has a pic of a dalmation on it. It's pretty hot. We then went to a coffee shop and just sat around talking and wasting time until... the acustic show at the Upper Room. The singer (caitlyn smith) was so good! We all loved her. When we went back to the dorm, we (Kate, Luiza, and I plus Kristi) watched A Walk to Remember (to continue the girl's night theme). I forgot how good that movie was. Makes me wish I had some romance in my life. haha... but not really. We all loved Shane West (as Landon Carter) mega bunches by the end of the night. We then played M.A.S.H. (remember that game from junior high??). It was SO fun! Kristi is the most random person ever, i love her! She came up with the most random choices for the game! We were all hyper then so we doodled on Kate's fridge. Then we decided to take our artistic abilities to a bigger level. So we went to the study lounge and drew "The Mural of Life" on the glass doors. 'Twas oodles of fun. We had some interesting encounters with people who were just coming in (it was 3am by the way). Makes for good stories. :)

Saturday:
Woke up late. Therefore I wasn't expecting much to happen with my Saturday. But it ended up being awesome. Some of us were able to get these cheap tickets to the Minnesota Orchestra. So 5 of us got all dressed up, took the bus downtown, and pretended we were all sophiscticated by getting coffee and going to the orchestra! It was really good. It was a fun way to spend Saturday evening! Afterwards we came back to the dorm, sat around in the lounge, argued about what movie to watch, and then watched the final Indiana Jones. After the movie a few of us sat around talking until 3:30am. It was super fun.

I love weekends. So relaxing and fun!! I wish every day was a weekend. I wish I didn't have college to go to. I just wish I could hang out here. But that's life. :)

I guess I just dont get it Nov. 10th, 2005 @ 03:16 pm
What's so great about drinking?

Feel free to answer!

Oh dear. Nov. 7th, 2005 @ 11:08 pm
This week is going to be quite hellish for me. 8-10 page Anthropology paper. Biology Midterm. English research. Icky.

This is gonna be very interesting.

I shouldn't complain though. I brought this on myself by procrastinating. bah humbug.

What would I do without Melissa in my writing class?? She keeps me awake and entertained at 8:15 to 9:30 every Tuesday and Thursday morning (with the help of my other friend Caffeine). She is awesome. We write notes back and forth. We have a bunch of stuff in common too. Note to self: hang out with Melissa outside of class sometime!

And you know what, this campus IS small. I keep running into Paul- and its a different time/location every time! I ran into him after my writing class this morning. This is the third time we've randomly seen each other. Hmm..if you wanted to avoid someone on campus, it must be harder than you'd think!

I don't have class until 12:45. So I'm reading Mythology stuff. I best get back to that.
» I wanna best friend
I got into another funk tonight. These aren't cool. Tonight's funk was brought on by the feeling that I miss having a best friend around. I was so used to seeing Marcus or Sylvia or Nikki almost every day. They cared about me and went out of their way to spend time with me.

But here at the U, I don't have a best friend. I don't have anyone that I'm mega-close with yet. All around me people are bonding. I wish I had more of that. Sure, I've made a lot of friends here. And I've met a lot of awesome people. But I don't have anyone that wants to be connected to my hip. I know its way too early to expect that, but I miss that feeling.

I'm partly to blame for this though because I have a tendancy to avoid getting seclusive with anyone so that I don't shut new people out. And for the most part, that's a good thing. But then I see people who DO get seclusive with other people (and become GREAT friends) and I get jealous.

I was GREAT at meeting people the first weekend. But then it came time to raise the relationships up beyond the small talk level. And that's where I get stuck. I'm not great at joking around with people when I'm not fully comfortable yet. But a lot of people around here ARE great at that, and therefore end up getting close with the people that they joke with.

So yeah, that's my ranting for tonight. g'night.
» Partying it up...lol
I had an awesome night last night! Last Friday was pretty boring, but my second Friday night as a college student was tons of fun. I went to my first "college party" and had a blast. But that term "college party" is misleading, because that makes it sound like some wild drunken party. It wasn't like that. It was a party thrown by a bunch of people who are in the Campus Crusade group. So technically it was a "Christian party". But that sounds misleading too. That sounds like its a holy worship service event. But that's just as far from the truth. Instead, I'd describe it as a party with tons of people who were just having good clean fun.

It was at "The Quad" which is an apartment building that has four apartments. All four apts were involved with the party and opened up their rooms. The upper floor was turned into a coffee house. They served really good coffee drinks and created an environment to sit around, talk, and relax. One of the rooms downstairs was turned into a dance floor. At first I didnt think anyone was gonna dance. But by the end of the night there was a group (mostly guys) who were rockin out to classic dance songs like "I Will Survive" and "Hey Mickey". They were hilarious! And the other room was the game room. I was playing Catch Phrase in there for awhile. And there was another group playing cards and spoons.

The fun part about all of this was meeting new people. I've gotten to know the people on my residence hall floor really well. And we all stick together a lot. So this was good opportunity to branch out and meet other people. Callie, Clara, and I were a few of the only freshmen there, but that was fine. I hadn't met too many upperclassmen until now. Everyone seemed really cool and I hope to run into them again!

We got back to Middlebrook around 12:30 I think. And then we went to Keith and Pete's room and played cards. The game didn't last long though. Cuz we decided that it would be the coolest thing ever if we could build the world's biggest card house. So yeah, we monkeyed around with that for awhile. Then eventually I got tired and went to bed.

I've been here for 2 weeks already. In some ways it seems like longer. Some it feels like shorter. These two weeks have gone by REALLY fast. But when I think about it, it feels like I've known everyone/everything for a lot longer. These people's faces are so familiar to me already, that it feels like we go back farther than 2 weeks.

So yeah, that's my recap for last night. I might post about more events later. But right now I'm gonna go to my aunt's house (here in the city) for my Grandma's birthday party. It'll be the first time I see my parents since I moved. It'll make the situation of me not living at home seem more real.

Have a great day everyone!

My first week here at the Uof M is almost complete! Wow! I'm having a great time so far. Everything is going great and I'm so excited for this upcoming year!

Last Saturday, mom and dad moved me into my dorm in the morning. They unloaded me, we ate lunch, and then they left. I met my roomate, we unpacked a bunch of our stuff, and then we decided to socialize. So after the majority of our possesions were put away (at least in temporary spots), we decided to go down our hall and meet the other new people. So we headed over to another girls room and chatted with her. Then she wanted to come with us to meet new people. And then we kept snowballing. Eventually we were leading a pack of people down the different wings on my floor meeting all the new people. I got to know tons of people on the very first day. It was a lot of fun. Then that night we even had a game of Skip-bo and then Catch Phrase going. It started out being 5-6 of us sitting in the lounge, but the the end of the night there must have been about 20 people! It was good times. On the very first night our floor was laughing and having fun together.

The next day was loft day. So all the prearranging of furniture that we did in our room was destroyed as we lofted our beds. We developed quite a bed lofting system. It worked great to work as a group and go to each of our rooms in turn. Two of the guys would lift up the loft while a couple of us girls would put the lofts with pins underneath them. It went rather smoothly.

Throughout the first weekend there were a few different social events that they prepared for us to go to. Those were pretty fun. It was good getting to mingle with people from the building. Mingling is fun. I like meeting all these new people. I feel bad for the people who avoided socializing like the plague. There were some people who shut themselves up in their rooms the whole weekend, either that or they were out (either with family, at home, or hanging out with high school friends). Those people missed a lot of the initial getting to know each other stuff which I felt was crucial. Its a lot harder to meet people now than it was on teh first few days.

I've gotten visitors already. I feel special! Doreen and Danette and Landon visited me on Monday. I showed them around and we went to lunch. Then Kristen and Andrew stopped on by on Wednesday. We went to eat at a nearby chinese restaurant and got extremely full. Kristen and I are planning on going to Ikea sometime soon. That'll be good so I can buy some more organizational units.

Tuesday I started classes. My class schedule seems okay I guess. The classes that I have are:
Anthropology 1902. Freshman Seminar: Race Construction of Whiteness
English 1021V. Intermed Expository Writing
Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology 1042H. Greek and Roman Mythology
Biology 1001. Intro to Biology
Journalism and Mass Communication 1001. Intro to Mass Comm.

If you want to know how the classes are going, ask me in another week or so. Cuz I'd have a better idea then.

Most nights are spent hanging out with people on my floor. Either one-on-one in someone's dorm room or as a group in the lounge (or in someones room while getting yelled at by the security guy after quiet hours...haha). Nights are fun, cuz I never know what we'll end up doing. I've had some good talks with some of the people on my floor. I feel like I'm getting to know some of the people really well.

Last night I checked out Campus Crusade- a campus christian group. It was fun. It'll be better once I met more of the people who are in it though. Cuz everyone seems to know each other so us freshmen kinda felt left out because we didnt have the same connections. But I think it could be really cool. Me and another girl left the crusade party early though so we could attend the last few sessions of our floor's open door party. That's when each wing has 20 minutes where they have their doors open and people visit. That was kinda cool. It seemed to bring the floor together a bit more. :)

I haven't had TOO much homework yet. There are people studying all the time though. I guess I've been pretty lucky. I've got stuff I could be doing right now, but hey ITS THE WEEKEND...i've got a few more days to put it off! hehe!

I've been looking for a job. No luck yet though. I went to a job fair, but they only had crappy jobs there.

I love my new computer + fast internet. I love my new colorful bedspread. I love my roomate (we got really lucky). I love my floor. I love that I haven't been very shy since I got here. I love getting letters in the mail.

I've already taken a bunch of pictures. I've been established as a photographer on our floor. Luckily I haven't gotten too many complaints about being annoying with the pics. If I do though, I know I can blame it on my family!

So this was my update as of now. Just a bunch of random thoughts I compiled together!! Want to know anything else about my new college life, let me know!!
» I used to by really shy
I like knowing people. I like running into people who know me. That's not gonna happen as much here at the Univ of Minn as it would at a smaller college, so thats kinda unfortunate. But that's why i love spending a lot of time in my residence hall (instead of wandering the whole campus). cuz i know so many people over here already.

i dont know what happened to the shy little person I used to be a few years ago. I've been so outgoing during the last couple days. I'm so incredibly proud of myself.

I had my first class this morning (writing) and I'm leaving for another class (biology) in 15 minutes. I felt like I fit in just fine at my morning class. I felt like a college student and that was awesome. I feel like I fit in here so that's a plus!

i bought a bunch of posters today. spent too much money, but i will try to forget that! I bought a Grease poster, a cool lightning scene, and a whole bunch of famous artworks (they make me feel cultured). So now my side is as decorated as Mallory's!!

Yeah, I'm having a great time at college so far!
» COLLEGE...woot woot
I'm at college!!! Yesterday was my first day here. It was AWESOME. I met so many fun people. Our floor has been having a blast. From mingling, to playing games, to unpacking, we've been having a grand ol' time!

The moving in process went smoothly. I got here before Mallory did, so I had some stuff unpacked already. Then she came with her mom and her sisters. Our room became a disaster with all of our boxes and junk, but that's expected. We couldn't get our lofts yesterday. We need to wait until this morning. So our room isnt really organized yet, because after lofts we are still gonna need to reorganize everything.

Mallory and I seemed to get along right away. After we had unpacked the majority of stuff, we met up with her friend who lives on the floor above us and checked out her room. SHe named her plants after us. woot woot. Then we met some more 11th floor people. Then we decided to go back to our home floor (10th) and meet our OWN floormates. So we went to a few rooms near ours and talked to people with their doors open. And then when we said we were gonna go mingle some more, the new people came with us! ANd then MORE people joined. ANd then MORE! So we had a whole mingling train going down the hallways meeting people with their doors op[en. It was so much fun. I wasnt shy at all yesterday. I'm so proud of myself! :) And I'm proud that it was ME AND MY ROOMATE who started all the mingling on our floor. We rock. :):)

I bought my books. Walked in the rain. Ate supper with the girls in my wing. Went to an ice cream social (that was fun too- met people from OTHER floors). Then I was gonna go find the group of girls from my wing, but in the process I found new people (who had a candy trail on the wall leading to their dorm!). And so I hung out with a bunch of people in the evening. Then the group decided to play SkipBo and then Catch Phrase. We had some huge groups playing these games. IT was awesome. Nobody paid TOO much attention to the games, we were all just talking and joking around. Eventually we all decided to go to bed around midnight.

Then Mallory came back to the room (she had gone to see the hypnotist that night) and we talked for awhile. We did basic "get to know each other" and "setting up rules" topics that were listed in one of our guidebooks. Pretty cheesy questions, but hey, some of it was kinda interesting!

So then I went to sleep in my new bed (fyi- i love my new bed comforter set). ANd woke up this morning! And a group of us sat around in he lobby just talking this morning before we all decided to go to breakfast. But I ate cereal in my room cuz i'm cool like that. so i'm skipping breakfast and came to this computer lab (erm...cyber cafe i guess). I don't have my own comp set up yet. I'm gonna do that tongiht.

So there it is...my first day summary!
» Saturday...gabfest with the girls
Now what did I do on Saturday? Well in the morning I finished up Season 3 of Gilmore Girls. It was so awesome seeing Rory graduate now that I have been through the process myself. I love Rory. I am SO her. But she went the teary route with her val speech whereas I went the more lighthearted route.

Then in the afternoon a bunch of my friends came over for a movie night. Nikki, Sylvia, and Laura all came over and we watched Forrest Gump (we had to make Nikki watch it, cuz she hadn’t seen it before! Que horror!) and Elf (I bought it a few months ago but hadn’t watched it yet. I loved it though!). Then the movie idea slipped away and we spent the rest of the night talking. And when I say night, I actually mean night through morning. Nikki and I stayed up ALL NIGHT LONG. We even went outside to watch the sunrise! Laura and Sylvia crashed for only a few hours. Then Nikki and I woke them up with fresh pancakes (that we made to keep ourselves busy…you must keep busy when not wanting to fall asleep).

It was SO great to have my girls over one last time. They all leave for college on Wednesday. That’s so sad! Then a few weeks after that, I myself am leaving.

Tonight we are gonna all meet at The Coffee Company (because that’s “our spot”) to say goodbye!
» Friday...my friday night was wild
On Friday I was like “Hey, I should do something fun”. But then I never made any plans. So instead I decide to go home after work and work on some projects that need to get done. I got home around 7:30. And guess what I did! I went to my bed and crawled in. I figured I would only nap for an hour and then have supper. But what do ya know…next time I wake up it’s 1:30am!!! Crap! There goes my Friday night! So I had to get up, change out of my jeans and get those darn contacts out of my eyeballs. Then I slept for the rest of the night.

» A Neato Poem
I have a feeling my upcoming roomate and I are going to get along great! She seems really fun! She even wrote a POEM for me! Not a sappy poem, but a fun corny poem!!

I've decided to write you a poem, eh ehm...

I don't really know you at all, but I'm sharing a room with you
I like to eat and dance and talk, I hope you like to too
Since this is your first glimpse of me, I'll try to keep it tame
But I guess you already know some things (for example, my name)
I'm running out of things to rhyme, I don't really ever write
But if this thing turns out well, hey, who knows, I might
So I'll keep on going, in case this bit gets better
I only meant to write a little, but it's turning into a letter
OK, I'm taking too much space, with not that much to say
I'll see ya soon, with lots of stuff: hello on move-in day!

» those darn butterflies
I have a weird feeling in my stomach this morning. The thought of eating anything makes me feel like throwing up. I never feel like this. I mean, c'mon, i love to eat- so there MUST be something going on. haha. I'm not sure if i'm physically not feeling well or if this is more of an anxiety/anticipation/premonition type of thing. And I can't say that the feeling is necessarily bad- it could be a good sign too. who knows. it just makes me wonder if something monumental happened (or is going to happen) that I don't know about yet.
» not sure how to feel
Single.

I'm single for the first time in 2 years 9.5 months.

Wow. Weird.

I just had the most amazing weekend at a TEC retreat! I want to go back!! I miss everyone already! I was a resource (a table leader) and somehow (by the grace of God-no doubt) my table was SO awesome! We all became so close. We had tons of fun and we all just really clicked! We (my partner Rachel) and I had NO problem getting the group to talk and bond. It all came so naturally. We were the closest and coolest table at the retreat..i'm so proud of that!

I'm sad that I'm not going to be able to be as active with TEC once I go to college. But this weekend was a great way to pause my tec experience. It was what TEC is meant to be like. A lot of friendship, acceptance, and spirituality!

I'm on a such a high from this weekend! I can't wait for the reunion!
» My handy dandy checklist...always be prepared!
I just created the most awesome, most handy, most organized, most bestest college packing checklist ever known to this planet. I've written down 85 items so far in a spreadsheet, placed them each in categories, and have columns to check whether i have them, if i'm gonna buy them, or if my roomate will bring them. wow. it really rocks. the only thing I'm missing is color coding. that's going a little over the top (hehehe).

i'm such a freak. i love it though!
» Wasting my time on LJ
I'm so bored at work. They don't give me enough stuff to do. Although surfing the internet and wasting my time SOUNDS fun, after awhile it gets tiring! Grrr. Don't they realize how valuable I could be? Don't they realize that I can tackle more than the simple mindless repetitive task that they give me? Do they realize that those mindless tasks often take me only 5 minutes to do and then I'm stuck here being bored? Arg.
